South Yorkshire Association of Cricket Officials

The Annual General Meeting on Monday of the South Yorkshire Branch of the Association of Cricket Officials (the organisation of Umpires and Scorers) resulted in the appointment of a new Chairman, Terry Bentham (the Yorkshire County Performance Officer for Umpires) and a number of new faces applying to take up vacant positions that had arisen.

Among these were Alison Barber of the Yorkshire and Derbyshire League as Treasurer, and Steve Ward of the Yorkshire League as Scorers Officer. Both Alison and Steve are recently appointed Scorer Tutors for the County, under the campaign about to be launched by the ECB to raise the profile, status and quality of scorers in League cricket.

With Linzey Scothern of the South Yorkshire Cricket Alliance taking up the vacant post of Vice Chairman and a number of South Yorkshire Senior Cricket League umpires and scorers taking up other positions, the Branch now has representation from all the major local cricket Leagues on its Committee.

In his acceptance speech the new chairman thanked the members for their support and paid tribute to previous chairman, June Walker.

He went on to say he was looking forward to helping to make the branch with the largest membership (nearly 300) in the county the best.

He felt with the committee we now have this can be achieved if we all pull in the same direction. Everyone on the committee will hopefully take on a task as he said it was not just a debating society. With the cross section of committee members all Saturday leagues in the area are represented. This hopefully will give a wider and better balance of views within the game.
